This investment-grade 2003 Gibson Fern F-5 mandolin represents the pinnacle of Gibson’s modern era of instrument building. This exceptional mandolin bears the highly coveted internal signature of then-Plant Manager Danny Roberts. His signature serves as a hallmark of quality for serious bluegrass players and vintage collectors alike.
This mandolin features premium tonewoods, including a hand-carved solid spruce top paired with highly figured solid maple back and sides. A traditional sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish protects the wood and allows it to vibrate freely. The figured maple neck sports a comfortable rounded "V" profile, topped with a smooth ebony fingerboard and classic pearl dot inlays. The headstock displays the iconic, intricate "Fern" abalone and pearl inlay, complemented perfectly by gold-plated tuning machines and a matching gold tailpiece.
Tonally, this instrument delivers the legendary, deep, woody bark and crystalline high-end register that defines the Gibson sound. It possesses a powerful, cutting chop that easily cuts through any dense acoustic ensemble or bluegrass jam. Professionally set up, the action remains low and fast across the entire fretboard. The mandolin is in excellent, player-clean condition, showing only minimal finish swirling and some slight fret wear. It is completely free of cracks, structural breaks, or repairs. The instrument comes securely housed in its original Gibson hardshell case.
